Mary-Alyce Burleigh has served on the Kirkland City Council since January 2002. Previously,
she served a two-year term as Mayor starting January 2004.
After earning a B.A. in History and Education from Washington State University in 1964, Ms.
Burleigh began teaching high school history/government at Burlington-Edison High School. She moved
to Redmond High School in 1966 where she spent the rest of her teaching career before retiring
in 1995, with the exception of 1977-78 which she spent teaching in London, England as a
Fulbright Scholar.
Since moving to Kirkland in 1974, Council Member Burleigh has been very active in the Kirkland
community. She was a two-term member and Chair of the Kirkland Planning Commission, founder
and first President of the North Rose Hill Neighborhood Association, as well as founder and
co-Chair of the Kirkland Alliance of Neighborhoods. Her other activities include past President
of the Board of the Northshore Senior Center, Chair of the Northshore Adult Day Center Advisory
Board, member of two Kirkland Park Bond Committees and member of the I-405 Citizens Committee.
